Between Light and Memory

In the 61st edition of Casa Decor 2026, held at the Palace of the Marquis of los Vélez and Count of Niebla, Impar Design presents «The Journey of Smoke» («El Viaje del Humo»), a space conceived for Durstone and Impar Grupo that reinterprets the 19th-century fumoir as a contemporary lounge experience.

Drawing inspiration from old tobacco drying houses, where dense air and filtered light created an almost intangible atmosphere, the project translates historical memory into a shared space where materiality and light take center stage. Rather than recreating the past, it distills its sensory essence into a contemporary language where comfort, technology and design coexist naturally.

Durstone’s Imagine porcelain collection, in black and white with a glossy finish and 15×15 cm format, serves as the structural backbone of the intervention. Far from a purely decorative role, the ceramic organizes the space from the flooring to the perimeter bench, forming a continuous system that eliminates hierarchies between surfaces. The bold geometric pattern of the flooring introduces rhythm and depth, while its glazed finish amplifies light and generates reflections that heighten spatial perception. The repetition of the motif gives the whole an almost architectural reading.

The space is articulated around a large lounge area with built-in benches clad in the same ceramic, reinforcing visual continuity and creating a fully immersive atmosphere. The contrast between the black-and-white porcelain and the warm terracotta tones of the textiles achieves a careful balance between freshness and warmth. Light, filtered through a latticework, casts shifting shadows across the surfaces and intensifies the geometric interplay of the floor, making illumination itself a dynamic and central element of the design.

Vegetation, textile elements and integrated audiovisual solutions complete an environment conceived for pause and conversation — a space where time, much like in the original fumoirs, seems to slow down.
